Basic Instinct

| by Leslie Marnett (aka The Dean)

I generally do not believe in strict cosmetic RULES. Experimentation leads to individuality and self-discovery, specifically in regards to color. You should sample whatever pleases you visually and viscerally. The worst that can happen is that you may need a face wipe. But the best that can happen is that you discover a new item to spice up your routine.

For those of you who follow all the rules, trusting your instincts may not feel natural. So here is an excellent GUIDELINE I find allows for exciting exploration in a very orderly fashion.

If your skin is naturally cool (pink, beige or red), brighten your cheeks or lips using warm undertones.

And vice versa…

If your skin is naturally warm (yellow, caramel or olive), brighten your cheeks or lips using cool undertones.

For a little more guidance, I suggest these wonderful colors:

For COOL skin:

Cheeks:
Nars Blush in Exhibit A (www.narscosmetics.com) - Inside this black compact is a shot of pure orange. But you can create a lower impact version by using a fan brush to lightly dust it over the apples of your cheeks.

Lips:
Dianne Brill Lipstick in Velvet Corset (www.diannebrill.com) - Like the name, this velvety texture hugs your lips all night. And the fruit punch color keeps them looking plump.

For WARM skin:

Cheeks:
Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Blush in Sand Pink (www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com) - It is highly pigmented, so you will be blushing in two swift swipes.

Lips:
Vincent Longo Perfect Shine Lip Gloss in Rede (www.vincentlongo.com) - The vibrant color and sheer texture is a perfect combination for those who want experience a new boldness in a subtle manner!

Trust your gut. Trust yourself. I always knew makeup was the key to a brighter future!
